Anyone watched the game on Sunday? Did your team win? I had a great time with family members watching the game and commercials and eating all of the food. And let’s not forget the halftime performance. While I am not a fan of Shakira nor JLo, I thought they did AMAZING.
This week’s Tuesday Topic: Tell us about an injury that sidelined you from running and how you dealt with it.  You can write about this topic or feel free to post any running related blog post. Remember to Link-up with Kim and Zenaida! Visit at least two of the other linked posts – the more the merrier!  Remember to come back for later linkers!
It seems like running and injuries go together. I’ve been running for over 10 years and have had my share of injuries. Each one has been different, but I’ve been able to recover and run again.
My list of injuries include IT band, calf strain, plantar fasciitis, and runner’s knee. I feel like there are more but cannot remember. Oh and let’s not forget my fall last month.Â
How do I deal with an injury?
√ Denial/anger
Why me? Why did this happen to me?
√ Acceptance
An injury happens to a lot of runners. I remind myself that I am not the only one. But I still have the same questions “Can I still run?” or “When can I run again?” Luckily my injuries haven’t been too serious and I’ve been able to run again.
√ Rest
I take advantage of this extra time to recover and heal. Oh, and sleep more too! 🙂 Â
√ Do another activity
I catch up on TV shows or read a book. I use my Peloton to stay active until I can run again.
√ Be patient
Yeah, this is a hard one but very important. I mean I cannot make an injury go away or make it recover faster. I have to wait and hope that I don’t get another injury. 🙂
Every runner is different and we all react differently. Injuries are definitely not a fun thing to have but many times “they just happen”. I’ve had my share of injuries and have always felt grateful that it wasn’t too serious for me to stop running forever.
How do you deal with an injury? What is the worst injury you’ve had?
Accepting the injury exists is the first step. I think we’re all guilty of ignoring the niggles until they become bothersome (myself included). Patience is crucial in letting any injury heal. Rushing through the “healing” process does no one any favors.
You are definitely on point. Everything you mentioned makes sense but then also at the same time we just plain stubborn. Right?
I know most of my injuries really have just appeared during the taper. I guess I must be doing something right, because even though there’s been pain or aches, nothing like that has happened in a while (knock on wood!).
I think the people who only run have the toughest time, because they have basically no other outlets.
I agree. That is how I was until I got my Peloton. I mean I also could have gone to the gym but I didn’t. 🙂
I wish I could afford a Peloton, but I am pretty busy fitness wise as it is!
That’s a good point about doing finding another activity you can do while healing up. The first time I had tendinitis in my foot, I ended up in a boot for 6 weeks and basically didn’t do anything during that time. It wasn’t good for my mental or physical well being.
I cannot imagine being in a boot and not doing being able to do any other kind of activity.
Staying active with cross training while sidelined from running was key for me. I really was able to keep up my cardio and fitness with my Peloton.
I agree! I took your advice. Glad that I have so many runner friends to help me out. 🙂
Patience! Yes, it is so hard, especially if you’re a devoted runner!
Time will go by more quickly if we’re busy with something else – like cross training the upper body if we can’t use our legs. Good advice, Zenaida!
Thanks.
Acceptance is a tough one – but getting to this point makes it so much easier to start a recovery plan and look forward to the future. My worst injury was runner’s knee when I was just starting our running. Aside from a hamstring niggle from time to time, I think I’ve bee lucky so far.
Good point!
I think that patience is the most important thing you can have when it comes to dealing with running injuries. We all want to go back to running as soon as possible but if we dont properly heal the injury that’s just a recipe for disaster.
I agree! We are are also stubborn. Haha! 🙂
