Ran 5 days for a total of 24 miles.  When my coach told me last week that I was going to run that many miles this week, I almost did not believe him.  I knew it was going to be another hot week.  Luckily it cooled down beginning on Friday but this coming week it is supposed to get hot again.

This week I started training based on my HR zones.  Or is it just based on HR?  I admit that I rarely paid attention to my heart rate and just ran by feel.  I thought my easy pace was easy but based on my heart rate, it isn’t.  Looks like I was running my easy runs too fast.  

These are the numbers I plugged in my watch Tuesday night.

Oh my!  Talk about patience.  I knew the heat and humidity would be a factor but my heart rate was high.  I set up an alert and it was constantly going off which annoyed me.  I understand the reason why that happened but it is something I am not used to.

I ran 5 miles on Tuesday and it was rough.  Hot and humid too.  My average HR was 142 and the highest was 186.  I must have been dehydrated too because I had a headache halfway through my run and I did not feel well the rest of the day.  When I got home I drank about 6 cups of water (and Nuun) and I did not go to the bathroom till later in the afternoon.

This is from Wednesday’s run (4 miles with 3×30 second surges and 1 minute recovery).  Actually did good.  What a difference from Tuesday once I paid attention to the HR.

I ran 7 miles on Saturday and 5 on Sunday.  I thought I was patient person but these two runs drove me crazy.  Overall pace was much slower because I had to walk a lot to bring down my heart rate.  I know I shouldn’t care about my pace but part of me does.

I like my routine of running by my house during the week and doing my long run on Saturday on the lakefront.

This kept happening on Sunday.  I finished this run in 1:11:26 which is an average pace of 14:16.  That is about 2 minutes slower than my run on Tuesday (also 5 miles).  I know, patience.

On Friday I cleaned up the office/cats’ room.  I also cleaned out my metal file cabinet where I still had paystubs, bank statements, and credit card statements from 6 years ago.  Those will be recycled.  Now I need to clean out my bedroom, the living room, kitchen, and the hall closet.  So much stuff in this apartment!

Finished reading this book.  So good.  I am not happy with the ending and I have so many questions.  Have you read this book?  I know Wendy has.

  1. HR training will pay off. Don’t let that ego get you!

    And heck, I’m still doing nasal breathing & just as slow — after months (but right now I think the summer heat has something to do with that, too). This weekend was really awful here — it was supposed to rain, and I’d hoped it’d cool things off, but it never rained.

    I’m not training for anything so I’m “going the distance”.

  2. Awesome job on your runs and mileage this week! My heart rate is always high in the heat but super high when it’s humid outside.

    I cleaned out a few files this week too and now I have a pile of papers that I need to take to th shredder.

    • I never realized how high it would get till now.

      I have a small shredder at home that I bought years ago. Once in a while when I accumulate lots of papers is when I use it.

  3. Don’t worry about pace in this heat! You’re out there, getting in miles, time on feet, getting all the benefits! It will pay off.

    Nice work on all the organizing, that must feel great! 🙂

    • Thank you! I usually don’t care about pace but these numbers are really something else. Oh well. I am not training for a race so now is the perfect time to do this. I’ll be ready next year for training.

  4. You’re doing absolutely awesome, being ultra-disciplined and knocking out each and every workout on your schedule. This time is not to worry at all about pace and time but instead to build up your mileage base in an efficient, responsible way that’s ALSO going to allow you to make very important physiological gains. All of this work will pay off BIG come fall and winter, hang in there!

    • Thank you! I am happy you believe in me and keep me going. It is so easy to feel like I am going nowhere but I do have to be patient and wait. It has been tough these past weeks and I am surprised I’ve been able to keep up with my runs.

  5. Patience is right! I just couldn’t do it, but every now and then I keep thinking I will give it a try. It does end up being a lot of walking for me. Congrats on making it through those runs! I really need to clean up my home office, but the lure of my pool, and bike riding is too strong right now 🙂

    • I’ve never would have done it because I wouldn’t know how to do it. Thinking about it now, it does not look that complicated.

      Oh I know what you mean. I know there are other things to do than declutter. I want to do it now so when I do move, I don’t take stuff I don’t want/need.

  6. That’s a great week of mileage, especially considering how hot it was. I’ve never tried HR training, but I would have to assume the humidity has an effect because it’s more difficult to breathe…right?

    • Thanks! The humidity does make it difficult to breathe plus it increases my heart rate because I get hot. I sweat A LOT too. Yeah, not fun at all. 🙂

  7. I’ve never had the patience for heart rate training — it’s tough! I love running along the lakefront, but there’s no shade so I’d have to start early. 😉 Great job on that long run and all those miles.

  8. I think that 24 miles in this weather = 35 miles in good weather. Not scientific but the conversion factor seems right. I’ll be interested to hear what comes of your HR training.

  10. My HRM on my watch hasn’t been working great so it doesn’t accurately tell me my hr. But i can tell my easy runs are not all that easy right now in the heat! Great job getting in all those miles.

  11. It is amazing how quickly the HR increases in the heat and humidity. You are smart to run by HR but it is tough because yes, we need to walk to bring it down. Summer running is hard!

  12. There is no way I could do HR training down here. It would take me all day to finish a run.

    I will be cleaning out our office this week and weekend as well. The furniture I wanted wasn’t in stock yet, so I put everything on hold a week. Also, I’m a little nervous to paint on a ladder with my ankle, but I guess I will figure it out.

  13. I do not have enough patience to train by heart rate. I think once I tried and it was summer and it had me down at a 12:30 pace. In the summer i mostly just want my runs to be over with haha, so increasing the length of time I’m running is not something I’m really interested in. I’ve heard it works great for lots of people though, so kudos to you for trying something new!

    I’d love to run at the lakefront- it looks gorgeous!
