Fit Five Friday: 5 self-care ways to show love for yourself

This week’s Fit Five Friday topic: 5 self-care ways to show love for yourself.  You can write about this topic or any fitness-related post.  We’ve got FIVE incredible co-hosts My First 5K and MoreRunning With AttitudeRun Laugh Eat PieRuns with Pugs, and Zenaida so be sure to link up with us.

We all love self-care right?  What it is and how we do it is different for each one of us.  Let me tell you what I do.

💟 Exercise.  I run and sometimes I walk.  I know, I know, I need to do more.  My Peloton misses me.

💟 Watch what I eat.  It may not be perfect but I do what I can.  However, there are days when I get too stressed and I go for what I want to eat.  Hello Big Mac and french fries!

💟 Get enough sleep.  I am usually in bed by 9 pm and wake up between 4-5 am.  Sometimes I do OK and other times I wake up in the middle of the night and it takes me a while to go back to sleepMelatonin does make me sleepy but I need it to last longer.

💟 Do things I enjoy. To me, that is either watching TV or reading a book.  On Monday I finished reading my 4th book this year.  I also like to meet up with friends for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

💟 Drink less coffee and drink more water.  As much as I love coffee, I have cut down on it.  I drink one cup in the morning and that’s it.   Sometimes, I will stop for coffee at Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts, but I don’t do it as often as I used to. I bought a Brita pitcher to have in my room and fill it up in the morning.  My goal is to finish it at school.

Fit Five Friday and February 2023 Ultimate Coffee Date

Welcome to the February edition of the Ultimate Coffee Date hosted by Coco and Deborah.  It’s also time for another edition of Fit Five Friday hosted by My First 5K and MoreRunning With AttitudeRun Laugh Eat PieRuns with Pugs, and me!  Let’s get started, shall we?

I am glad January is over.  It did go by quickly.  While it was a mild temperature-wise month for us, we are now closer to March and to some races.

There is more to tell.  So grab a mug of your favorite beverage and let’s chat for a bit!

If we were having coffee…
I’d tell you that Amazon sent me an Echo Dot by mistake.  When I contacted them about it, they asked if maybe someone had gifted it to me and to see if there was a label inside.  No one did and there wasn’t a note.  Then they asked if I wanted to send it back.  I already have one, but this one is nicer.  They said I could keep it and I did.  The one I have now I will give to my niece.  Would you have sent it back?

If we were having coffee…
I’d tell you that I finished watching Golden Girls.  That final episode!  Wow!  I cried.  It is such a good show.  My favorite girl was Dorothy and I am a little like her.  I also adored Sophia.

If we were having coffee…
I’d tell you that I need to do a better job of reading blog posts in order.  Ahem, or not fall too behind.  At the beginning of January, I was reading posts from the Friday linkup.  I thought I was finished (not sure how or why) but then I started reading the posts from Sunday’s linkup.  I had a feeling I was “off” but kept reading.  Something made me go back to my posts and that is when I realized I didn’t finish reading all of the posts from Friday.

If we were having coffee…
I’d tell you that a few years ago I did something to my blog to make money through ads.  I completely forgot about it until last month when I checked the dashboard.  I made $100!  Haha, I know it isn’t much but it is $100 I didn’t have before.  That will come in handy to help buy my ticket to Washington, DC for the Cherry Blossom 10-Mile Race.

If we were having coffee…
I’d tell you that I don’t understand the big deal with the two spaces after a period.  I do it all of the time. As a senior in high school, I took a typing class on the recommendation of my counselor.  One of the best classes I took and I did really well in it.  What about you – two spaces or one?

Fit Five Friday: 5 struggles I face in reaching my fitness goals

This week’s Fit Five Friday topic: 5 struggles you face to reaching your fitness goals.  You can write about this topic or any fitness-related post.  We’ve got FIVE incredible co-hosts My First 5K and MoreRunning With AttitudeRun Laugh Eat PieRuns with Pugs, and Zenaida so be sure to link up with us.

Last week I wrote about the things that motivate me.  Now, we know that not everything is perfect and there are times when I am not motivated or something holds me back from doing a workout or a run.  Then this in turn will cause me to struggle to reach my goals.

Let me tell you about some of the struggles:

🌟 Excuses.  Sometimes I have many of them – it is too cold or too hot, I am too tired, or I don’t feel like running today.

🌟 Procrastination.  Because of the excuses listed above,  there have been times when I say that I would do my run after work.  Then something happens and I don’t end up doing it.  That is one reason why I’d instead like to get it done in the morning.

🌟 Unrealistic goals.  Can I really PR by 1 hour in this race?  Instead, should I make it my goal to PR by 5 or 10 minutes?

🌟 An injury.  Like many runners, I’ve had a few injuries – ITBS, runner’s knee, calf strain, and plantar fasciitis.  They’ve left me out of the running game for a few months.  One year I wanted to do one of those running series to run 3 half marathons in the Summer (for my 50 states goal) but was in the beginning stages of plantar fasciitis.  I knew I should take time off from running and rest up.

🌟 Feeling burned out.  I have experienced this a few times.  Once it was during marathon training.  I finished my long run, called my coach, and started crying.  I told her I didn’t want to run anymore.  I wasn’t feeling the excitement of running or the marathon anymore.  She listened to me.  I can’t remember what she told me but that year I ended up not running the marathon.  I looked up my races for that year and saw that I ran 18 races (one being a 50k) that year and 24 the year before.

Fit Five Friday: 5 things that motivate me

This week’s Fit Five Friday topic: 5 things that motivate you.  You can write about this topic or any fitness-related post.  We’ve got FIVE incredible co-hosts My First 5K and MoreRunning With AttitudeRun Laugh Eat PieRuns with Pugs, and Zenaida so be sure to link up with us.

Happy Friday!  I am so happy it is Friday.  It would be even better if it was also payday.  Oh well, at least I am off on Monday.  I am taking Tuesday off to take my mother to the doctor so next week will be a short work week.

Let me tell you about some of the things that motivate me:

🌟 Having to follow a schedule.  I like to know what I am doing for the week or for two, three, etc. weeks.  There is something about having it visible that gets me excited.

🌟 Gear and weather.  I like my gear to be nice and comfortable.  In the warmer weather, I love running in a short sleeve top and shorts.  During the colder weather, I prefer to wear less bulky clothes.  We’ve had some decent weather for January, making it much more enjoyable for me to get out for a run.

🌟 A goal.  It can be a race, a PR, a specific number of classes/miles, etc.  That is something that will also get me up and training in the morning during the hot days of Summer and the cold days of Winter.

🌟 Be healthy and active.  I turned 50 not too long ago and intend on being around for a few more decades.  I am hoping I can retire in 10-12 years and want to enjoy my retirement.  I have worked too hard not to enjoy it.

🌟 Fun workouts.  I enjoy running and look forward to it.  I’ve worked with many wonderful coaches and have been excited and looked forward to my workouts.  Some may have seemed daunting to me but coaches know what is best for me and I’ve had to let go of my fear and trust them.

Fit Five Friday and January 2023 Ultimate Coffee Date

Yay for 2023 and for the first edition of the Ultimate Coffee Date hosted by Coco and Deborah.  It’s also time for another edition of Fit Five Friday hosted by My First 5K and MoreRunning With AttitudeRun Laugh Eat PieRuns with Pugs, and me!  Let’s get started, shall we?

I am excited about this year.  I have a new word for 2023.  I will be traveling to NYC and Washington, DC for two races.  Once I have more information about another summer school program, I will make plans to travel to Mexico.  Finally, a project that I listed in DonorsChoose got funded at the end of December.

There is more to tell.  So grab a mug of your favorite beverage and let’s chat for a bit!

If we were having coffee…
I’d tell you that I am a bit sad that today is my last day of Winter Break.  I enjoyed it.  I wrote a post of things I was looking forward to and I did all but 1 (to write a few blog posts).  However, Kim and I finalized our topics for Tuesday Topics and the Fit Five Friday team also put together a list of topics.

If we were having coffee…
I’d tell you that even though I just mentioned I am sad about Winter Break being over, I am looking forward to getting back to my school routine.  A teeny tiny part of me also missed my 2nd graders.  We have a bunch of assessments to do in January so it will be a busy month for us.  I will have snacks and words of support and encouragement for them.  It is all about the food.  🤣

If we were having coffee…
I’d tell you that I signed up for my third race this year – the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8k.  You know it is one of my favorite races.  I took it as a sign to finally sign up when I received an email encouraging me to sign up for $45.  It was $5 less than the regular price but still that was my sign.

If we were having coffee…
I’d tell you that my mom turns 80 this year and we are planning a BIG celebration for her in September.  She has a big family so it will be fun to have many family members together and celebrate.  It won’t be a surprise party since she was at the kitchen table when a few of us were talking about it.

If we were having coffee…
I’d tell you that I finished reading “Landslide” and “Come Fly the World”.  I liked the latter much more than the first one.  My next book is “Crying in H Mart”.  I love to read.  Like running, reading is my alone and me time.  It saddens me to see that many kids do not know how to read or don’t like to read.
