Fit Five Friday: 5 gross things runners do

Happy Friday!  I hope everyone is doing well.  It is getting hot here in Chicago.  I have my days when I like it and other days when I don’t.  Regardless, I am still out there running.  Today is day #329 of my runstreak.

I know there are more than 5 gross things runners do.  But for this post, I will limit it to 5.  Feel free to add more in the comments!

😮 Stay in running clothes all day long.  I know it isn’t always possible to shower after a run.  However, I simply cannot imagine staying in sweaty and smelly clothes (I know not everyone may sweat or smell) the rest of the day.  I smell and sweat a lot!  When I get home after a run, I either eat first or shower.  I remember one time that I did not shower after my run.  I cannot remember the reason but do remember that I was assembling a desk from IKEA.  Friends invited me out to eat and I didn’t go because I wanted to finish the desk.

😮 Pop blisters.  I have done this.  I know I am not supposed to but for some weird reason the blister hurts less when I pop it.  When I ran the RunDisney Goofy Challenge a few years ago, I got two blood blisters.  I had a flight to catch and knew I would be very uncomfortable if I left it alone.

😮 Snot rockets.  All I can say is that I don’t do it and haven’t been behind anyone that did this.  GROSS!

😮 Pee along the course.  I have seen mostly men do this.  I remember once during either the Chicago Marathon or the Shamrock Shuffle, there was a line of men peeing on the side of the course.  I am not justifying what they did but I do know that we all had to wait close to or over an hour in line before we could start running.

😮 Peel off dead toenails.  I’ve only had one black toenail and it took a while for it to separate from my toe.  It was completely separate but still somewhat attached.  I thought it would hurt more if I left it to fall off on its own.  So, I took my nail clipper and removed it.

Fit Five Friday and June 2021 Runfessions

It’s the last Friday of the month which means Marcia has opened the Runfessional!  It’s also time for another edition of Fit Five Friday hosted by DarleneRenéeJenn, Michelle, and me!  Let’s get started, shall we?!

 I runfess…
That I am halfway done with Summer School.  It is going by fast.  While I am very happy to have students in my room, it is shocking to see exactly how much they missed out on last year.  My students are struggling in reading, math, and writing.  I know there isn’t anything I can do about it now and don’t want to worry about it either but I just cannot stop thinking about it.  Every morning I go in ready to teach but end up modifying so much of it because the material is just too hard for them.

 I runfess…
That I have no idea why I get so much spam email.  One day I had 35 and another day 4!  How?  It cracks me up that many of them are for pornography.  Lately I’ve also been unsubscribing more from newsletters and companies that I am no longer interested.  But seriously how does one get that much spam email?  Thank goodness for Gmail for filtering them and putting them in a different folder so I can delete them all at once.

I runfess…
That I have the iPhone X but have been thinking of upgrading.  I’ve had it since January 2019 and I like it.  It does what it is supposed to do and haven’t had any issue with it.  The thought of paying more each month isn’t appealing.  I think I already spend too much on my phone bill (who doesn’t?) and do not want to switch.  I’ve been with the same company for about 20 years and according to them I already get a good deal from them.

I runfess
That I almost signed up for a 4-mile race next week.  It is one of my favorite races!  Is it weird to say that I do not feel ready for a race?  I don’t even know why I feel that way.  Based on my training, I am ready.  How hard can 4 miles be?  I’ll wait and see how I feel next week.  I do know that it i supposed to rain on Sunday.  Actually it is supposed to rain all next week.

I runfess…
That I cannot believe June is almost over.  July will be here soon and then August.  Then we know what happens next.  I know I shouldn’t be complaining since I did sign up to teach Summer School.  I also signed up to teach in a Jumpstart program for students entering Kindergarten in the Fall.  It is for 4 weeks, 4 days a week, and 3 hours each day.  I don’t have the job yet but cannot imagine not getting it since I know there is a lack of teachers that do not want to work this Summer (and I do not blame them).

Fit Five Friday: 5 things to remember from June 2020

Join me as I go down memory lane again to remember a few things from June 2020.  I did a similar one in April.  I am enjoying reading again posts from last year and seeing how some things have changed.

🗓️ Graduation celebrations – Last year there were none.  They were all celebrated via caravans.  It is great to see that they’re all taking place right now.  Two weeks ago my nephew graduated from HS and then my niece graduated on Friday.  I did not go but at least they and family members got to attend the actual graduation.

🗓️ Summer School – After more than a year of remote learning, some students are back in the classroom.  Last school year there were 3 in my room.  For Summer School I have 13 students on my roster but 11 have shown up.  It is nice to have them in the room but it is also exhausting.  😀 Plus I can honestly see how much school they lost this past year.  This is getting me ready for the 2021-2022 school year.  Also,

🗓️  Phase 5 – And in the blink of an eye, we are now in Phase 5. Things are looking more normal now.  I am still wearing a mask when I go to the store, doctor, etc, and have met up with family members a few times.  Feels good to get together, eat, and laugh.

🗓️ Have not moved yet – This year it is ever harder since it is a seller’s market.  Some of the houses around where I live are selling for higher prices than last year.  I still want to move so I need to figure out exactly what to do.

🗓️ Virtual races – Remember how last year this was all we did?  I did them to keep me motivated.  Real races are finally taking place this year and a few of you have participated in them.  I have yet to do so.  Though one of my favorite races, Elmhurst 4 on the 4th, is actually taking place.

Fit Five Friday: 5 fun things I am planning to do during Summer break

I am finally on Summer Break!  Today is my second day and while I still woke up early, it felt good NOT to go to school.  Today I am taking my mother to the doctor for two appointments and then have a family gathering in the evening.  Busy day!  Next week I start Summer School and will be done July 9th.

As much as I would love to stay home and not leave my house unless it is absolutely necessary, I know that is not what I should do.  Illinois enters Phase 5 today and hopefully soon things will feel normal.

Let’s check out my list!

☑️ Do more runs along the Lakefront.  I miss it.  My excuse was that I didn’t have enough time to run there, come back home, and get read for work.

☑️ Go to the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit Chicago.  I’ve heard good things about it and I am sure it will be fun.

☑️ Get together with friends.  Since this whole pandemic started, I’ve done this maybe 5 times.  I know I am introvert and while I may not meet with a large group, 2-3 friends is fine.  We all need to eat, right?

☑️ Travel.  A quick trip for a few days is just what I need.  I would love to travel to Mexico because my mother hasn’t been there in two years.  Two cities for sure I would like to visit are NY and Washington, DC.

☑️ Read.  Maybe some of you do not consider this fun but I love to read.  Right now I have 3 books from the library.  I need to check out Cari and Wendy’s blog because they have mentioned the books they’ve read in their posts.

Fit Five Friday and June Ultimate Coffee Date

I am so happy that it’s Friday!  I’m starting off the weekend with a little catch-up over the Ultimate Coffee Date hosted by Coco and Deborah.  So grab a mug of your favorite beverage and let’s chat for a bit!

If we were having coffee…
I’d tell you that even though I’ve been complaining pretty much all year about school, I am a teeny tiny bit excited (a little nervous too) for the new school year in August.  I will have new students and will be teaching new Reading and Math curriculums.  Also, students will be in the classroom.  It has to be better than this year, right?

If we were having coffee…
I’d tell you that a former student sent me and other teachers a thank you note.  I read it and cried.  It made me very happy to read her note.  I know I may not make a difference in all of my students (hopefully another teacher does) but it is nice to hear from a former student.  Unfortunately I have not seen her in over a year and hope she continues to do well in school.

If we were having coffee…
I’d tell you that as of this morning I am 33% into my goal of running 1,200 miles this year.  I told myself that if I can get to 50% by the end of June then I will it at 1,200 instead of changing it to 1,000 miles.  I can do this!

If we were having coffee…
I’d tell you that yesterday was my nephew’s high school graduation.  He enlisted in the Marines and will leave for Camp Pendleton sometime this month.  Honestly I thought he would to college somewhere in IL.  I am very happy for him and cannot wait to celebrate with the family this weekend.

If we were having coffee…
I’d tell you that I know it’s been warm these past couple of days but I’ve been EXTRA warm at night.  I remember being able to sleep comfortably at night with just a blanket.  Now even a blanket is too warm for me.  I wonder if it is me or it feels warmer in my apartment since I live on the 2nd floor.  It has to be the latter.  😅
