I don’t normally run on the trail.  However, when I was training for the Lake Michigan Marathon, I would do my long runs on the trail.  I wanted a different place than running along the lakefront.  Also,  I realized that I would recover much faster when running on the trail.  Plus, there is a certain smell (dirt) that comes with it.  It may sound weird but it is true and I actually enjoyed it.

Last month I received a pair of Under Armour Horizon RTT trail running shoes.  Under Armour reminds me of Michael Phelps (and his cool video) and running clothes. Definitely not running shoes nor trail shoes.  I was still very interested to check them out.

The Horizon RTT comes in 5 colors.  I picked marlin blue/neptune and I love the color .

While they weren’t heavy, they felt more stiff than my regular running shoes.  My first run in them hurt my right foot.

A few more runs in them and the shoes feel a little bit more comfortable.

While they’re primarily trail shoes, they also did well on the road.

I also wore them to work (in my skirt).  🙂  I like that they’re wide enough for my feet.

Check out these lugs!  I have a feeling these will be great to run in the snow.

Overall, I am pleased with my shoes.  My only regret is not sizing up.  I wear a 9.5 and remember reading some people suggesting to size up.  I don’t know why I didn’t.  I have been wearing thin socks and no longer run more than 5 miles in them.

Monday was my first day back at work.  In the morning I worked in my room and then parents dropped off school supplies from 9-10 am.  Then meetings, lunch, and another meeting in another building.  Long day.  Thankfully we had a break to see the eclipse.  It was cloudy but did manage to see a bit of it.

Tuesday was more meetings.  It went by fast.  I couldn’t stay late because I had a doctor appointment for my yearly checkup.  I had to step on the scale and was very surprised at the number.  No, it didn’t go down but instead went down.  I was tired so I didn’t really care.  But now I do.

My first day with the kids was Wednesday.  Some of the teachers used chalk to write messages for them.  Pretty cool!

I have 24 students in my room.  Wow!  At the end of the day I wanted to cry.  I was exhausted.  My back, feet, and legs hurt.  I have a rough group of kids.  I remember my first year and it wasn’t that bad.  These kids talk a lot and don’t know when to stop talking. They’re also distracted and looking elsewhere but me.

Tired cat

The next two days were rough too.  Something new this year is that the kids eat breakfast in the lunchroom.  They come in at 8:30am, grab breakfast (if they want), and go to the classroom.  They have 15 minutes to put stuff in their locker and eat.  It isn’t enough time because they like to talk which in the morning is fine but they also need to eat.  In the meantime I take attendance and track who ate breakfast and who brought a lunch.  The kids need to stop eating at 8:45, throw away the garbage, and clean up because at 8:50 they have a special (gym, media, art, gym, or computers).

I know the first couple of days/weeks are rough.  I am ready for that.  I need to remember those moments that make teaching so worth it.

24 Comments on Under Armour Horizon RTT shoes, back to work, and a giveaway!

  1. I’ve never run on trails but I love the look of those sneakers. I like UA workout gear but have never tried their sneakers.

Congrats on your first week back to teaching! I had an awesome English teacher in 7th grade called Ms. Norris. She was such a kind woman and taught me so much in that one year. I’ll never forget her.

    • Thanks Kim! Glad to hear you’ll. Ever forget your 7th grade teacher. I hope I make an impression on my kids too!

  2. Oh, I’m with you on loving the smell of a dirt road! I also love the smell after a rain …the best time to go for a run!

Those UA trail shoes would be great for hiking as well ….I could’ve used a pair of those on some of my hikes this past week 🙂

Thanks for linking Zenaida ….now I’m heading over to register for that Momentum key ring! Love it!!

    • I’ve never had trail shoes either. I bought a pair from Brooks but sent them back because they felt too bulky.

  3. A huge salute to you for doing what you do…teaching! I could never do it (my patience for other people’s kids is very low LOL), but I have so much respect for the people with the bigger than big hearts who can. As for running, I don’t do much trail running (not much available in my area), but I do enjoy it for a change of scenery and terrain.

    • Thanks! I may have my bad days in school but overall it is a rewarding experience. I try to do go trail running when I can. I find it peaceful too.

  4. I didn’t even know UA made trail shoes! Did they feel stiff to you? I do love trails but I do a combination of both. All the best with the new school year!

    • I didn’t know either! Yes they did feel stiff to me. Different too as it isn’t something I am used to.

  5. The shoes are so cute! I mostly run road but occasionally I run trails. I just bought a heavy duty pair of trail shoes for a race that I did this summer but this look more like an every day type of shoes. I’ll have to check them out!

Hopefully the school year gets better for you!

  6. Trail running is fun once in a while. I got some UA running shoes through my work for the Cherry Blossom race and I loved them! They were a different model – lighter but supportive enough for medium distance runs.

    • Glad to hear you enjoy trail running as well! I’ve seen those running shoes as well. The coaches from my training group last year wore them during our runs.

  7. I’m in awe of teachers. I get a lot of kids in my clinic who don’t behave well–but my time with them is limited. I can’t imagine a whole year with them.

    • Thanks Wendy! I am firm but also nice. These next few weeks are critical to establish rules and procedures. I am hoping they adjust to my room with minor problems.

  8. My favorite teacher was actually an old boss…he taught me that successful organizations closely follow their mission statement. I find the same to be true in life.

  9. I hope this week went a little better! I prefer both trail and road running. I’m super slow and cautious on the trail, but the scenery is so gorgeous! Road running is so convenient, and I like that I can just run and not worry about tripping.

Thank you for your comment!
