I am deviating from today’s topic to write about this past weekend.  Sunday was the Chicago Marathon.  No, I didn’t run was I was spectating in Pilsen.  I had a blast and almost got me motivated to run it again.

The weekend began with a fun event with Alison Désir on Friday.  She was in town promoting her book “Running While Black“.  There was a fun run and a panel discussion with two other runners.  As much as I enjoyed listening to them, I was a little disappointed that Alison did not talk about her or her book.

There were treats for everyone – water, coffee, and snacks.  I tried Nemi cactus sticks and found them to be really good.

I did not run but did try on again a pair of the Brooks Hyperion Tempo.  And just for trying them on I was entered into a raffle to win a $300 head to toe Brooks outfit or one of Alison’s books.  Bummer but I didn’t win.

Every person that attended got a bag.

Sunday was Marathon Day!  I did a quick run in the morning, showered, and got ready.  Pilsen is my favorite place to spectate.  When I got there the wheelchair participants had already begun to pass by.  I knew the runners would be next.

First came the elite men.  I am always in awe of their form.

Then came the elite women and other elite runners followed by everyone else.  I was rooting for Emily Sisson and was pleased she set a record for an American woman.  I really wanted her to win 1st place.

Some fun entertainment.

I saw many friends but missed a few of them as well.  I thought the tracking app did a good job of letting spectators know the location of the runners.

I saw Erica past mile 19 and Renée at the mile marker.

I love this photo of Emily along with the other women that have set a record for an American woman.

Overall it was a fun day and I was tired by the time I got home.  I know, I know, not as tired as the runners.

Thanks for this, Zenaida! I think these are the first photos I’ve ever seen of the route of the Chicago marathon.
Looks like the runners had perfect weather, too.

Do you know the names of the other women in the last photo?

Next to Emily are Keira D’Amato, Deena Kastor, and Joan Benoit Samuelson.

Sounds like such a fun time! And I’m so glad you got to see Renee! When I saw you were spectating, I was hoping you’d catch a glimpse of her. It must be amazing to live in a city where there is a major marathon and can imagine that it would bring some running motivation back!

It felt great being out there and seeing all of the runners!

I’d love to run the Chicago Marathon someday, or spectate at the very least. I’ve done nine marathons, so I HAVE to do a 10th one, right? Like you said, the elites are so inspiring to watch…they make it look effortless. But, I also LOVE watching all the “normal” runners, too. It’s great fun cheering them on, many of which are embarking on their first 26.2 finish line 😉

I have been running in brooks for years. That would have been awesome if you won the outfit from head to toe. Sounds like a great weekend. It is always fun spectating races.

It wasn’t meant for me to win. Oh well. Hopefully next time, right?

Come next year! We’ll make a weekend out of it. Or you could run it! Yes, the 10th!!

Looks like a fun time! Glad you got a chance to see Renee out there and I am sure she appreciated the support. It always amazing to watch the elite runners go by

I say it jokingly that it looks like they’re running “slow” but they really aren’t.

It sounds like you had a fun day spectating, and how cool that you saw both Erica and Renee!

I have no plans to do another marathon but would love to visit Chicago and run through the city and waterfront. Looks like you had a great time spectating.

I love that you saw Erica and Renee on the course!

Chicago Marathon weekend is just so much fun! Although my marathon days are over, I wouldn’t mind spectating this race. Of course you already know Pilsen is my favorite neighborhood in the race.

Come so we can spectate together!
